Walking Wonders in the Alps

Lush green meadows along the trails, fresh air, and the breathtaking view of the Austrian Alps: that is what walkers appreciate most in Zell am See-Kaprun. This summer, there'll be even more reasons to go on a journey up hill and down dale: the region has extended its walking offer to appeal to the holiday makers. The highlights: a new 50-page walking guide and an online platform where guests can plan their tour upfront on their computer at home.

'Walking wonders' - that is the name of a handy publication which presents the most rewarding and beautiful trails and Alpine inns. From height profiles and detailed maps to the indication of the walking time, the readers find everything they need to know about the local network of trails. Information on the level of difficulty, public transport, and parking spaces can be found at first sight.

If you plan to spend a lot of time roaming the trails of the region, you are well-advised to take the catalogue with you in the first place. Many Alpine inns will reward you for your efforts with a stamp. Depending on the level of difficulty of the conquered stretch, you receive a certain number of points: for easy tours, there is one point, for average and hard walks, there are two and three points, respectively. When you have collected as many as 40 points, you'll receive the golden hiking needle! The silver needle is given out to guests who reach 30 points, and at 20 points, there is the bronze needle for you.

At home, you can already figure out whether you want to aim for gold, silver or bronze during your stay in the popular holiday destination. At the new hiking portal at www.zellamsee-kaprun.com, you can experience the region via web. The system is easy: the users open the page and can take a close look at the routes from a bird's eye view. The interactive map allows retrieving all the walking routes and informs about the closest cable car facilities, tourist information offices, sports and leisure time activities or other attractions along the way - like the sculptures displayed at the open-air art museum on Schmittenhöhe.

Maximum comfort and efficient planning of the day: this has been the aim of Zell am See and Kaprun when implementing their new offers, and that is exactly what the guests can look forward to at the region's homepage. Another state-of-the-art service is the Global Positioning System (GPS): equipped with a GPS device, you can download the coordinates of your favourite trail from the internet and have them displayed during your walk. That way, you don't have to worry about going astray!

But there is even more: to prepare its guests as well as possible, Zell am See-Kaprun offers a presentation once a week which is free of charge. From 23rd June 2008, selected sports equipment stores have local guides present the network of trails and give advice on equipment, planning, and the maps you should take with you, and of course, the right outfit can be purchased right on the spot as well!
