Nordic Walking - More Effective than Walking

WEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL 2008
Submitted By: Maricar Cinco

It’s definitely more than just walking! A recent study by the Cooper Institute in Dallas proved that, compared to normal walking, Nordic walking helps burn more calories and increases oxygen consumption. Walking with poles is 46% more efficient than using the legs alone.

Susa Putnam, a fitness and yoga instructor at Metamorphosis in Montgomery, says Nordic walking increases upper body movement which increases the amount of energy expended. The American Nordic Walking Association gave a similar observation, stating that the walking poles can increase the heart rate on average of 10 to 15% more than taking a pole-less walk. Walking with poles burns well over 400 calories per hour while traditional walking only burns approximately 280 calories.

Likewise, people are encouraged to practice Nordic walking outdoors. Putnam also shares another research study which claims that walking indoors on a treadmill while the weather's great outside may induce a negative impact on the person’s mood. From Europe, the exercise trend ‘walks’ its way across the northern and western and soon the Southern parts of the United States.
