Free Nordic Ski Walking Clinics at Garland Resort

TUESDAY, 4 MARCH 2008

Glen Arbor, MI (PR.COM) - Free Nordic Ski Walking Clinics led by Pete Edwards, owner/founder/coach of The American Nordic Walking System and www.Skiwalking.com, are coming to the Garland Resort in Lewiston, Michigan on Saturday, March 8th from 2 - 5pm during Garland Resort's Annual Gals Winter Weekend. These Nordic Ski Walking Clinics are free and open to all participants in the Gals Winter Weekend program, all Garland Resort guests, and the local community. The free Nordic Ski Walking instruction is based on the American Nordic Walking System. Walking poles will be used for free as well.

Edwards has hosted numerous Nordic Ski Walking Clinics across the country at other Women's Winter Events, Gals Weekends, and Girls Only Ski Events. His Nordic Ski Walking Poles are always a hit with the skiers, snowshoeing enthusiasts, and hikers.

Nordic Ski Walking Fun Facts:
  • Walking with Nordic Ski Walking poles (with correct length) is gentle on the shins, knees, hips, and back - and provides an effective aerobic workout.
  • Nordic Ski Walking is somewhat like cross-country skiing, but no snow and no skis are required. You never fall down - low impact, yet high calorie burn.
  • Nordic Ski Walking poles from Skiwalking.com are modified cross country ski poles, custom made in Lillehammer, Norway. All poles come with patented comfortable straps, durable carbide metal tips for the trail, beach, snow and ice, plus removable rubber tips for use indoors or on pavement.
  • Nordic Ski Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in Europe. Over 750,000 folks in Finland are ski walking - which is 20% of the population. Over six million Europeans are walking with poles, too.
  • Nordic Ski Walking burns up to 40% more calories than just plain walking.
  • Unlike regular walking, running, and biking, Nordic Ski Walking works the arms, shoulders, and abs. Nordic Ski Walking works all of the major muscle groups.
  • Nordic Ski Walking provides all the low-impact benefits of walking, while reducing knee and joint strain, burning more calories, working the upper body, increasing oxygen consumption, and providing a more effective aerobic workout.
  • Nordic Ski Walking produces up to a 46% increase in energy consumption (Cooper Institute, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sports 2002 publication).
Nordic Ski Walking has been used at the University of Wisconsin in the rehabilitation of patients after myocardial infarction (MI). In the MI study, the oxygen uptake increased on average 21% compared to walking without poles. Utilizing the correct length poles and proper technique is important. Poles from www.skiwalking.com and The American Nordic Walking System come in a variety of lengths and are custom fit to each individual's height. One-piece poles are safer, lighter, and much more durable than twist-locking adjustable/telescoping/collapsible poles found in retail sporting goods stores. Perfect length poles help us to automatically walk with a super straight back - better walking posture is biomechanically a good thing. This improved walking posture, when combined with the unique four-wheel-drive type action of walking with poles, radically reduces the stress to the shins, knees, hips, and back. Nordic Walking is low-impact yet provides a highly effective workout - burning more calories and working more muscle groups than regular walking.
