Walk to Work Day Breakfast Works Out

More than 100 staff members from North Shore City Council, IRD and Smales Farm Technology Park left their cars at home and walked to work to celebrate North Shore City’s first Walk to Work Day last Friday.
Organisations from Smales Farm, including EDS, Air New Zealand, Sovereign and the Lion Foundation, as well as IRD and North Shore City Council celebrated the day with a free breakfast and spot prizes for staff members who walked.
Some staff members had walked for up to two hours from Albany and Browns Bay to one of the Takapuna breakfast locations, and an energetic group ran in from the East Coast Bays.
North Shore City’s transport strategy and planning manager, Archer Davis, says Walk to Work Day was all about highlighting walking as an option for people to travel to work.
“Walking is good for your health and good for the environment as it is a carbon neutral form of transport.
“Although we recognise walking won’t suit everyone, we would like to encourage anyone who lives close enough to their workplace to do so.”
Spot prizes and breakfast items were kindly donated by local businesses including Jesters Pies Takapuna, Enhance, Just Massage and SkinFit.
The event was co-ordinated by North Shore City Council’s workplace travel plan team and focused on organisations linked to the Auckland Regional Transport Authority’s (ARTA) TravelWise programme.
Workplace travel plans aim to encourage sustainable travel modes such as walking, cycling, car pooling and taking public transport. Walk to Work Day was the first event co-ordinated by North Shore City’s workplace travel plan team.
