Office Workers Burn their Calories through NW

Are you a walker? Ever fancied a cross country skiing trip? Well Nordic Walking may just be the answer for you to keep fit.

An intrepid group of usually sedentary office workers, from the Council and from the Local Health Board in Monmouth turned up for a lunch time session of Nordic Walking around Vauxhall fields. This was a welcome joint exercise funded through a Sports Council Grant.

Did we enjoy it? Yes we did. It was a surprisingly energetic exercise session which surely burned away the calories of the lunch time sandwich in just 40 minutes. We learned that Nordic Walking burns up to 40% more calories than a normal walk, pumps up our cardiorespiratory system, strengthens our upper body, and builds better bone density. Well that’s probably quite a lot to ask from one 40 minute exercise session, but we have made a start.

Ophelia Hogan came along to show us how it’s done, and to encourage us to do more with a pole than we ever thought possible, and she was both an inspiration and a demon in her insistence on keeping us going.

So if you see a bunch of extremely attractive fit young women striding purposefully and quickly around Vauxhall Fields one lunch time, it probably won’t be us, but if you fancy joining us on our next jaunt, please give Debbie a ring on 01600 710617, and we will see what we can do.
