Nordic Walking: More than Just a Sport

For most injured athletes, they think of Nordic Walking as a sport. But two people think of it as so much more.

Elaine Litvak started Nordic Walkign after she replaced both of her hips due to racquetball injuries. Tony Weaver, a serious runner, on the other hand, switched to Nordic Walking after his knees began to bother him.

Nordic walking may be the Miami Beach's newest secret workout, though people have been trekking along South Beach since 2001 using modified ski poles. A group of about about two dozen people, including Litvak and Weaver, meet every morning by the bike rack at Ocean Drive and 13th Street and start their walk spanning the length of South Beach.

Think of Nordic walking like skiing, except there is no snow or mountain.

Tony Weaver became so enthusiastic with Nordic Walking that he became a certified Nordic Walking trainer. He organizes the Miami Beach Nordic Walking Club, which anyone can join for free. The only requirements: getting up early and bringing your own poles.

Weaver leads two sessions of walks. The first walk starts at 7 a.m., lasts half an hour and covers 14th Street to South Pointe and back, a distance of about three miles. The second walk starts at 7:30 a.m., lasts an hour and starts from 14th Street to Mid-Beach and back, though distance varies.

On the weekends Weaver leads longer walks to various locations, such as a recent trek from the Venetian Causeway to Key Biscayne.
