5K Trail Added to Lakes Festival
WEDNESDAY, 21 MARCH 2007
A new five kilometre sports trail has been added to the programme for the first of the 2007 Lakeland Trails running and walking festivals taking place in Hawkshead village on April 28.
The event is open to everyone aged 12 and upwards, with a competitive race, fun run, walk and Nordic walk all combined.
The off-road course starts in Hawkshead at 10am, and winds its way along bridleways to the finish at Hawkshead showground.
There are winners’ prizes, along with prizes for the first under-16 boy and girl, and team prizes for businesses and health and fitness clubs.
All the finishers will receive an engraved medal, and there is an opportunity for people to raise funds through sponsorship for their own charity, or the nominated charity Coniston Mountain Rescue.
The extra event has been included in response to the incredible demand for the longer 15km events.
The Puma Trailfox Hawkshead Trail Race, Challenge and Nordic Challenge have all sold out weeks ahead of schedule with 1,000 competitors from all over the UK taking part, from Aberdeen to Cornwall.
Race Director Graham Patten said: “The growth has been phenomenal with numbers almost doubling from last year's inaugural event. “But I’m not surprised by this — last year’s Hawkshead Trail Race was rated one of the UK’s top 50 races, out of more than 3,000 races, by the readers of Runnersworld magazine.
“Trail running is rapidly taking off in the UK in a big way as people are looking for more of an adventure and challenge than pounding on tarmac roads, and the Lakeland trails have a great reputation. The Hawkshead Trail course is superb with a bit of everything and stunning views all the way around. It’s a tough course though — 15km along bridleways is a long way and there is a particularly arduous climb back from Windermere — the aptly-named Coffin Trail."
“By adding the new, shorter distance sport trail to the programme, we really do have something for all ages and abilities, as well as being able to offer an event to those disappointed at finding the 15km events full.”
More information about the trail, along with online entry, can be found from the event website at www.lakelandtrails.org.
