Nordic Walking Poles - Parts

As the primary equipment of Nordic Walking, it pays to know the components or parts of Nordic Walking Poles so you will be able to use them properly and eventually reap what the activity can do for you and your body. Read this section and learn the different elements that make up the poles.

Grip

Grips are made from non-chafing material to ensure maximum efficiency and comfort. The best grip is one with a positive angle, which relieves stress and overuse of the wrist joint. A true Nordic Walking Pole does not have a grip that flares at the bottom of the hand, as that hampers releasing the grip at the back of each arm swing.

Strap

The Hand Straps can be one feature that makes Nordic Walking Poles different from Trekking Poles. The straps are your link to the poles.

Good Hand Straps provide support in the wrists in a way that encourages good blood circulation. In checking the straps, make sure that they are adjustable and can give the comfort you need so you can avoid any type of stress in the wrists and forearms.

Basket

This round, usually flat, disk near the tip of the pole ensures that it does not dig itself too deep into the soil. Baskets include a lock spike tip, suspension tip, walker basket, trekking lock, and control asphalt paw.

Tip

This is the part of the pole that comes into contact with the soil.

Lock Spike Tip

This tip can strike the ground at the correct angle and ensures a secure grip on hard and slippery surfaces. It also has a quick release features which allows you to change tips when necessary.

Suspension Tip

This tip is excellent for use during winter.

Control Asphalt Paw

The Control Asphalt Paw absorbs pole impact while walking on hard surfaces.

Knowing the different parts of Nordic Walking Poles and learning where they are used for will help you understand how beneficial poles are when used the right way. Make sure, though, that the parts of your poles have features which meet your needs.
