Nordic Walking – Basic Technique
In its simplest form, Nordic Walking is walking with the use of a pair of poles designed for the activity. Though it does not require you to learn a lot of skills, it entails the proper technique so you can reap its benefits. Obviously, not doing it correctly will make you uncomfortable or may even lead to injuries. You need to learn how to synchronize the movement of your body and that of your poles. Follow these guidelines and learn how to Nordic walk the right way.
- Walk naturally. Relax your shoulders and arms.
- Do not grasp the grips too tightly.
- The poles should always be close to the body. Keep them pointing diagonally backwards.
- Start walking. Slightly leaning forward, begin each step with your heel touching the ground and then the toe and the ball of the foot pushing off the ground. Let the poles swing from the straps.
- As the right foot strikes the ground, move your left arm forward simultaneously.
- Keep each pole strike slightly behind the line of your pelvis.
- Do not put the poles in front of you. Keep the tips behind you. Do not plant your poles too far from your body.
- Open your hand and release the pole after each pole strike. The strap enables you to let go of the pole and still keep it close to your body.
As with any sport, it is important to do the techniques correctly so you can achieve the expected benefits. Nordic Walking may require simple techniques, but you should be able to execute them properly in order to enjoy the activity and get optimum results. Since the basic technique serves as the foundation for all other skills that you will learn, make sure to master it at the very beginning so it will be easier for you to get comfortable learning advanced skills.
